Why Does Paint on Iron Peel Off Quickly? Mistakes to Avoid

Paint on iron serves not only for aesthetics but also as a protective layer from rust and corrosion. However, many people complain about paint that peels off quickly within a few months after being applied. What causes it? Here are some common mistakes that you should avoid so that paint on iron lasts a long time and sticks well.

1. Not Cleaning the Iron Surface Properly
One of the main causes of paint peeling easily is dirt, oil, and rust that is still stuck to the iron before painting. Make sure you clean the iron surface by:
✔ Using sandpaper or a wire brush to remove rust and coarse dirt.
✔ Washing with thinner or degreaser to remove oil and fine dust.
✔ Drying the surface completely before starting to paint.

2. Not Using the Right Primer or Base Paint
Iron requires a primer coat (base paint) that functions as an adhesive between the paint and the iron surface. Without a primer, the paint cannot stick properly and is easily peeled off. Choose a special primer for iron, such as epoxy primer or zinc chromate primer, for more durable results.

3. Using Paint That Is Not Suitable for Iron
Not all paints are suitable for iron. If you use wall or wood paint, the results will not last long. Choose special iron paint, such as synthetic alkyd paint or epoxy paint, which has strong adhesion and is more resistant to weather and corrosion.

4. Painting in Humid Conditions or Bad Weather
If you paint iron in humid, rainy, or too hot conditions, the paint may not stick perfectly or even dry too quickly and crack. Make sure the conditions when painting:
✔ Not too hot so that the paint does not dry quickly before it sticks perfectly.
✔ Not too humid so that the paint can dry properly without mixing with water vapor.
✔ Do it in a place that is protected from dust and strong winds so that the results are smoother and do not peel easily.

5. Paint Layers That Are Too Thick or Too Thin
Painting that is too thick can cause the paint to bubble and crack easily, while layers that are too thin are not strong enough to protect the iron. For best results:
✔ Apply two to three thin coats, not one thick coat.
✔ Make sure each coat is completely dry before adding the next coat.

Peeling paint on iron is not only about the quality of the paint, but also how it is applied. By cleaning the surface properly, using the right primer, choosing a special iron paint, and paying attention to the painting conditions, you can ensure more durable and long-lasting results.
