info@intisumberbajasakti.comSteel is a material known for its strength and durability, but did you know that heating steel for too long can change its mechanical properties? In manufacturing and metalworking processes, the temperature and duration of heating steel greatly determine its final quality. If steel is exposed to excessive heat for a long time, this can cause a variety of undesirable changes.
1. Reduced Strength and Hardness
Steel gets its strength from its crystalline structure. If heated for too long, the microstructure within the steel can change, making it softer and losing its hardness. This is known as over-tempering, which can reduce the steel's resistance to heavy loads and pressure.
2. Risk of Oxidation and Decarburization
When steel is exposed to high heat for a long time, oxygen in the air will react with its surface. As a result:
✔ Formation of an oxide layer (oxide scale) that can weaken the steel structure
✔ Decarburization, which is the loss of carbon content on the surface of the steel, making it more brittle and easily eroded
3. Changes in Mechanical Properties
Heating for too long can also change the composition and properties of the steel, such as:
🔹 Decreased ductility, making the steel more prone to cracking
🔹 Decreased resistance to material fatigue, which accelerates wear in long-term use
4. Distortion or Change in Shape
If the steel is heated for too long, especially at high temperatures, there is a possibility that the steel will deform. This occurs due to uneven thermal expansion and changes in internal structure, which can cause the steel to bend or curve.
5. Errors in the Heat Treatment Process
In the manufacturing industry, steel often goes through heat treatment processes such as annealing, tempering, or hardening to obtain the desired mechanical properties. However, if heating is carried out for too long, it can actually eliminate the effects of the previous heat treatment, causing the steel to lose its hardness or tensile strength.
How to Avoid Damage Due to Overheating?
✅ Use the appropriate temperature for the type of steel used
✅ Control the heating duration so that it is not too long
✅ Avoid direct contact with open air to prevent oxidation
✅ Use the correct cooling technique after heating
