Water Pump Not Flowing? Check These 5 Causes!

Water pumps are an important component in water distribution systems in homes and construction projects. However, sometimes water pumps can suddenly stop flowing or the pressure can weaken. Before calling a technician, it's a good idea to check the following common causes.

1. Dry or Reduced Water Source
If the well or main water source starts to decrease, the pump will not be able to draw enough water. Try checking whether the water level is still sufficient or the well is shrinking due to the dry season.

Solution: Make sure the well or reservoir still has enough water. If the well starts to dry up, consider deepening it or using an alternative water source.

2. Clogged or Leaking Suction Pipe
The suction pipe functions to draw water from the source to the pump. If there is a blockage such as mud, sand, or scale, the flow of water can be obstructed. In addition, leaks in the suction pipe will cause air to enter, reducing the effectiveness of the pump.

Solution: Check the suction pipe to make sure there are no leaks or blockages. If necessary, clean or replace damaged pipes.

3. Leaking or Unstable Air Pressure in the Cylinder
Some pumps use a pressure tube to help distribute water. If there is a leak or unstable air pressure, the pump cannot work properly.

Solution: Check the air pressure in the pump tube using a pressure gauge. If it leaks, repair or replace the damaged component.

4. Damage to the Impeller or Pump Seal
The impeller is the part inside the pump that rotates to circulate water. If the impeller is damaged, worn, or clogged with dirt, the pump can lose its suction power. In addition, leaks in the pump seal can also inhibit water flow.

Solution: Disassemble the pump and check the condition of the impeller and seal. Clean from dirt or replace if worn.

5. Electrical or Pump Motor Problems
The water pump works with electricity, so if there is a problem such as unstable voltage, broken cables, or a damaged pump motor, the pump will not be able to work optimally.

Solution: Make sure the pump gets a stable electricity supply. If the motor feels hot or makes an unusual sound, check or service it immediately.

A water pump that is not flowing can be caused by various factors, ranging from a shrinking water source, clogged pipes, to electrical problems. By checking some of the possibilities above, you can solve the problem faster before calling a technician.
