KRAKATAU STEEL
PT Krakatau Steel is a state-owned enterprise (BUMN) specializing in steel production. Operating in Cilegon, Banten, the company was originally established as part of the Trikora Steel Project initiated by President Soekarno in 1960 to create a steel factory capable of supporting the development of an independent national industry with high added value, contributing significantly to national economic growth. When founded on May 20, 1962, the company, then called Cilegon Steel Mill, was officially established through cooperation with Tjazpromexport from the Soviet Union. However, severe political and economic turmoil halted the construction of the plant. It wasn’t until the early 1970s that construction resumed, and the factory was officially opened on August 31, 1970, under the name Krakatau Steel.
In its first decade, Krakatau Steel made rapid progress in developing an integrated steel production operation in Cilegon, with several key operations inaugurated by President Soeharto, including an integrated water processing center, Cigading Port, the 400 MW Cilegon Power Plant, and an integrated steel factory producing four main steel products.
