Plastering, Cementing, to Finishing: Here's the Difference!

In the process of building a house or building wall, you will often hear the stages of plastering, plastering, and finishing. Although they sound similar, all three have different functions and are carried out sequentially to obtain neat, strong, and aesthetic walls. Understanding the differences is very important, especially when supervising a project to avoid technical errors.

1. Plastering
Plastering is the first stage after the brickwork is completed. This process uses a mixture of cement and sand that is applied to the surface of the brick wall to:

• Even out the surface of the wall
• Cover the pores and gaps between bricks
• Become a strong base before the plaster layer

The thickness of the plaster is generally between 1.5–2 cm, and must be done evenly so that the final result is not wavy.

2. Plastering
After the plaster dries, the next stage is the plastering. Cement uses a mixture of cement and water (or instant mortar) that is applied thinly to the plaster surface to:

• Close the pores of the plaster
• Produce a smoother surface
• Prepare the surface before painting or installing ceramics

The cement layer is usually thin, around 2-3 mm, and requires precision so that the results do not crack.

3. Finishing
Finishing is the last stage and is related to the final appearance of the wall. It can be in the form of:

• Painting with interior or exterior paint
• Texture coating (eg putty or textured paint)
• Installation of wallpaper, ceramics, or natural stone

The purpose of finishing is to provide aesthetic value while protecting the wall from weather, humidity, or physical damage.
