Tips for Installing Wire Gabions to Resist Landslides for Years

Wire gabions are an effective and economical solution for reinforcing slopes, embankments, and cliffs to prevent landslides. These structures are made of woven steel wire forming large squares, then filled with crushed stone. Although they may seem simple, the durability of a gabion depends heavily on how it's installed.

Here are some important tips for ensuring long-term durability of wire gabions, even for decades.

1. Use Galvanized Wire
The galvanized coating protects the wire from rust and corrosion. Choose gabions with a high galvanization standard (such as Class A or heavy zinc coating) to withstand extreme weather and rainwater.

2. Ensure a Stable Foundation Before Installation
Before installing the gabions, create a flat and solid foundation using fill sand or river stones. Avoid installing them directly on loose, uncompacted soil, as this will cause the gabions to tilt or collapse quickly.

3. Fill the Rocks Densely and Gradually
Use crushed stone of a uniform size (approximately 15–25 cm) to ensure a solid foundation that won't shift easily. Fill the gabions gradually and avoid building too quickly on one side to maintain symmetry and stability.

4. Secure Gabions with Tying Wire
If using more than one gabion, secure the units with locking wire to prevent shifting between the structures. This technique is especially important for multi-level vertical structures on steep slopes.

5. Provide Drainage in the Surrounding Area
Ensure water does not flow directly into the gabions. Create drainage channels or infiltration holes to prevent water from accumulating behind the gabions, which can increase pressure and risk of collapse.
