info@intisumberbajasakti.comThe right mortar mix will determine the outcome of your building—from strong brickwork to neat plasterwork. Many builders still get the measurements wrong, resulting in walls that crack quickly or an uneven surface. To prevent this, here's a complete guide.
1. Choose the Right Mortar Type for Your Needs
If using instant mortar, check the label to see if it's for bricklaying, plastering, or all-purpose.
2. Follow the Correct Mixing Ratio
For instant mortar:
Simply mix the mortar with enough water (usually 4–5 liters per 40 kg bag, depending on the brand).
For manual mortar (cement + sand):
Avoid adding too much water, as it will weaken the mortar and make it prone to crumbling.
3. Mix Until the Texture is Consistent
Characteristics of a suitable mortar:
Use a mixer for large work volumes for a more even finish.
4. Wet the Bricks Before Laying
This is a small but important step: bricks that are too dry will absorb the mortar's water, making the mortar brittle quickly.
Simply sprinkle water lightly until the surface of the brick is damp.
5. Apply Mortar Gradually
Don't overmix.
Instant mortar usually only lasts approximately 1–2 hours after being mixed with water.
Once it has hardened, don't add more water—this will reduce the quality.
6. For Plastering, Use a Finer Mix
Sieve the sand if necessary to ensure a smooth plaster finish and avoid a rough texture.
The pressure when applying should also be steady to prevent wavy lines.
7. Let it dry thoroughly.
After installation or plastering, let it cure for at least 24 hours, then water it lightly to prevent hairline cracks.
