5 Things You Should Know Before You Start Casting

Casting, or the concrete pouring process, is one of the most crucial stages in construction. The quality of the casting results will significantly impact the strength, stability, and lifespan of the building. Therefore, this process should not be undertaken carelessly.

Before starting casting, ensure you understand the following five important points:

1. Use the Appropriate Concrete Mix
The proportions of cement, sand, gravel, and water significantly determine the quality of the concrete. Ensure you understand the ideal mix composition, for example:

Grade K-225: 1 cement: 2 sand: 3 gravel

Grade K-250 and above: ready-mix is recommended for high accuracy.

If necessary, use additives or additional materials such as waterproofing for special needs.

2. Pay Attention to Formwork Quality
The formwork or concrete mold must be strong, leak-proof, and precise. If the formwork is not tight, cement water will leak out, reducing the quality of the concrete.

Use rigid formwork materials such as wooden planks, thick plywood, or bondek for floor casting. Also, ensure the support structure is stable to prevent shifting during casting.

3. Install Wire Mesh or Reinforcement Correctly
Before pouring the floor, the wire mesh or iron reinforcement must be installed neatly and according to the working drawings. Its function is to:

  • Resist tension and pressure on the concrete
  • Prevent hairline cracks
  • Increase structural strength
  • Use spacers to prevent the reinforcement from touching the ground or formwork directly.

4. Weather and Casting Time
Ideally, casting should take place in the morning when the weather is still cool. Avoid casting during rain, as it can cause the concrete mix to become too runny and uneven.

After pouring, protect the surface from direct sunlight and allow the concrete to cure for at least 7 days to achieve optimal compressive strength.

5. Use Adequate Tools
Ensure you use appropriate tools such as:

  • Concrete mixer
  • Concrete pump for high castings
  • Vibrator to remove air voids in the concrete mix

If you don't have your own equipment, consider renting it to ensure optimal casting results.
